Long Term Disability
This benefit offers income replacement against long term loss of income due to injury or illness. This benefit is a core benefit and is typically designed to integrate with our Short Term Disability protection, but can also coordinate with Employment Insurance or a sick leave plan.
Long Term Disability insurance commonly includes:
- Benefit amount can be based on a percentage of monthly income or a flat monthly benefit amount
- The monthly maximum benefit available depends on the size of your group
- Worker's Compensation, no-fault auto insurance, group retirement or pension plan and primary CPP/QPP payments are direct benefit offsets
It's important to note that the disability definition is commonly based on the '2-year own occupation' definition. This means that the employee is considered disabled for his or her own occupation during the first 2 years of disability and thereafter is considered disabled for any occupation that is suitable by virtue of past training, education or experience. Some restrictions apply with respect to pre-existing medical conditions.
The taxable status of the LTD benefit is determined by whoever pays the premium. If the employees pay 100% of the premium, the benefit amount in the employee's hands is non-taxable if they become disabled. When the employer pays the premium (or any portion of the premium) the benefit is taxable when collected. Note that this applies to the employee group as a whole. All employees insured in the applicable class must pay the LTD premium in order for the benefit amount to be tax-free.
